Code of Practice

Code practice

The 2017 Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Pullets and Laying Hens provides the well-researched and scientifically verified foundation upon which the Canadian egg industry’s animal welfare programs and standards are built.  The Code outlines requirements and recommended practices that are ultimately integrated into the mandatory Animal Care Program.

The Code was developed by the National Farm Animal Care Council, utilizing a consensus-based, multi-stakeholder approach that included farmers, veterinarians, animal welfare experts, scientists, retailers, processors, and representatives from various governmental and non-governmental organizations.  The standards in the Code are informed by the latest scientific research, farming innovations, and societal expectations with respect to animal care.
