How long have you been an egg farmer?

I’ve been an egg farmer for nearly 17 years.

If you are a multi-generational farm, how many generations has your family/colony been in egg farming?

I am a 2nd generation egg farmer.

Why did you first get into egg farming?

I was next in line for a job in the colony, and landed in the laying barn.

What does being an egg farmer mean to you?

It means a lot to me to be an egg farmer, to be able to help feed the world, and always gain consumer trust. That is a great opportunity.

What do you enjoy most about being an egg farmer?

The thing I enjoy most about egg farming is walking birds, listening to their commute, and knowing they are happy and satisfied. Outside of birds, I really enjoy working with the people from the Colony that help with daily egg picking, and also how everybody comes together at barn depop and refill.

What type of farm do you have (ie: hen housing system)?

The farm has an older conventional barn, and a new furnished housing systems barn.

What type of hens do you raise?

We raise Lohmann white leghorn.

What type(s) of eggs do your hens produce (ie: white, brown, omega-3, etc...)?

Our hens produce regular white eggs.

Do you raise any other livestock and/or crops on your farm, in addition to your egg laying hens? If yes, then what?

The farm also has dairy, hogs, turkeys for commercial operations. Broilers, ducks and sheep for Colony consumption. We farm 20,000 acres, mostly wheat, barley, canola, and peas.

How does it make you feel to know you provide your fellow Albertans with fresh, nutritious and delicious, locally produced eggs?

It makes me feel great to be able to provide Albertans with fresh, nutritious, and delicious, locally produced eggs, and knowing they trust and love our product.

If there is one thing you would like people to know about egg farming and/or egg farmers, what would it be?

The one takeaway I would like people to know about egg farmers is, we do more monitoring and recording in our barns for these hens, and food safety, then we do for families.

What is your favourite egg recipe?

Pan scrambler.
