My family was honored a few weeks ago, as recipients of the 2016 Farm Family Award for Parkland County. BMO and Northlands sponsor the event, which has been running for 48 years. In their words, “the Northern and Central Agricultural Service Boards nominate outstanding families who best represent the values of the family farm within their rural community. The award honours both their farming business practices and community involvement.”
This award nomination came as a surprise to me, but I am humbled to receive it and know that our farm is one out of many worthy farming operations across the county. I also strongly believe that it would not be possible without the love and dedication of my family and the hard work of my employees, several of whom have been with us for decades. We joined 14 other families for a fun evening that coincides with the opening day of Farm Fair and the CFR Rodeo. We were treated royally with a reception, family photograph session, dinner and tickets for the rodeo. Both Vaness Laroque, Regional Vice President of BMO Bank of Montreal, and Georff Oberg, Chair for Northlands, talked about the value of agriculture from an economic stand point as well as from a community involvement perspective.
As the awards were presented to each family a short biography was shared, and I was amazed at how many multi-generational families there were. These 4th and 5th generation family farms are a testament to the hard work, perseverance, ingenuity and grit that is necessary for farms to survive.
Congratulations to all the 2016 Farm Family Award winners!!!
