Alberta Egg Farmers Applaud Announcement to Strengthen Trespassing Laws

October 3, 2019 (Calgary, AB) – Egg Farmers of Alberta (EFA) applauds the announcement made this morning by the Government of Alberta – Premier Jason Kenney, Minister of Justice and Attorney General Doug Schweitzer, and Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Devin Dreeshen – to support and protect Alberta’s farming families.  The government’s swift action will help ensure that Alberta farmers can continue providing world-class care for their animals, while safeguarding the supply of fresh, local food.

“Farmers have a tremendous responsibility to feed their fellow Albertans, care for their animals, farm in an environmentally responsible manner, and make a living for their families and employees,” says EFA Chair, Beatrice Visser.  “We are happy that Alberta’s legislators take this issue seriously enough to take real steps to protect farmers from illegal farm invasions and barn occupations, so we can do our job without having to worry about trespassing or harassment.”

EFA is thrilled to hear the government acknowledge that illegal trespassing not only has a detrimental impact on farming families and their business operations, but can also threaten the well-being of the animals and safety of the food Alberta farmers produce.  Canadian egg farmers are proud of the industry’s national on-farm food safety program (Start Clean – Stay Clean®) and Animal Care Program, which could be compromised by such illegal activities.
