Muffins for Horses (Pet Treats)

Ingredients

  • canola cooking spray
  • 500 mL (2 cups) grated carrots (3-4 medium)
  • 1 apple, grated
  • 250 mL (1 cup) bran
  • 125 mL (1/2 cup) all-purpose flour
  • 125 mL (1/2 cup) packed brown sugar
  • 50 mL (1/4 cup) instant oatmeal
  • 50 mL (1/4 cup) canola oil
  • 75 mL (1/3 cup) molasses
  • 1 egg
  • oatmeal for topping

Directions

Preheat oven to 190° C (375° F). Spray muffin pans with canola cooking spray. In a large bowl, blend carrots, apple, bran, flour, brown sugar and oatmeal. In a measuring cup, combine canola oil and molasses. Add egg and blend well. Add liquid ingredients to dry ingredients and mix until just blended. Spoon into prepared muffin pans. Sprinkle tops with oatmeal. Bake until lightly browned, about 20-25 minutes. When cooled, store in refrigerator.

Yield:

24 Muffins.

Safe Storage of Pet Treats

All treats that contain fruits and/or vegetables like apples and carrots, should be stored in a covered container in the refrigerator, and consumed within 2-3 days. They can also be frozen but should be used within 3 months. Dry cookies may be stored, covered, at room temperature for a couple of weeks.
