NEP FAQ

These questions were received from prospective new entrants:

Where do most egg farmers get their pullets?

Many Alberta egg farmers raise their own pullets from day-old chicks to 19 weeks of age, when they officially become laying hens.  For those farmers who are not equipped to raise their own, there are a number of commercial pullet growers able to raise pullet flocks for you.  A list of commercial pullet growers is available through Egg Farmers of Alberta.

How do most egg farmers dispose of end-of-lay hens?

Each farmer has a variety of options to choose from, for managing end-of-lay hens.  Many farmers sell their end-of-lay hens for meat, which requires the birds to be inspected.  Other farmers compost their birds.  All hens must be euthanized humanely, using an AVMA approved method.
