October 5, 2015 (Calgary, AB) – On behalf of the Alberta egg industry, Egg Farmers of Alberta (EFA) would like to applaud the Government of Canada for successfully negotiating the 12-country Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade agreement. The final deal will increase international access to the Canadian egg market by 16.7 million dozen eggs. EFA recognizes the many benefits that participating in the TPP will provide the agricultural sector and the Canadian economy.

Although the increasing amount of imported products will mean that Albertans will have access to less fresh, locally produced eggs and egg products, EFA is confident that our industry’s resiliency and growth will minimize the impact on the more than 160 farming families we represent.

EFA requires additional time to fully review and analyze the potential future impacts the TPP will have on not just our farmers, but the entire egg value chain in Alberta and across Canada. We are dedicated to building a sustainable egg industry, and an effectively functioning supply management system plays a vital role in fulfilling that objective. Canada has successfully concluded many free trade agreements while maintaining the uniquely Canadian system of supply management, and Alberta’s egg farmers are satisfied that this has once again been accomplished in the final TPP deal.
